Saint Sophia Church
The largest Eastern Orthodox Church in East Asia, Saint Sophia Church is one of Harbin’s most famous landmarks. First constructed in 1907, it was rebuilt in 1911 and again in 1923. Built in beautiful Russian style, the red brick church has a distinctive green onion dome in the center. In 1997, after decades of deterioration, the local government restored the cathedral to its original grandeur.
Today, the church is home to the Harbin Architecture Arts Center, displaying photographs from early 20th century Harbin. The hundreds of photographs provide a glimpse into life in Harbin in the early 1900s. A trip to Saint Sophia is a great way to learn more about Harbin’s history and an opportunity to admire the exquisite architecture of the church.
